Calming Currents Psychological Services PLLC serves individuals with concerns that are often rooted in emotional and relational concerns. Using attachment and relational approaches, we help individuals better understand themselves, their emotional patterns and reactions. These approaches help people to process their emotions by learning to experience them. We help people recognize and shift emotional and behavioral patterns to improve how they relate to themselves, others, and the world. Using relational and trauma informed approaches, people are often able to find compassion for themselves and move forward from the past.
Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a trauma-focused therapy that helps individuals process and move on from distressing experiences. It is a unique approach that uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain naturally reprocess memories in an accelerated way that typically leads to significant healing. Using EMDR, people can work through traumatic experiences without having to spend hours recounting the details. I also use AF-EMDR, which is adapted to focus on processing attachment traumas, such as abusive or neglectful relationships with parents or caregivers.
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is great for people who experienced difficulties in the relationships with their parents or caregivers. It also works well for people who notice patterns of challenges in relationships in their life. This evidence-based approach helps individuals better understand and process emotions, and often leads to greater sense of self and security within relationships. EFT is used with individuals and couples to identify underlying emotional patterns and work towards more flexible ways of engaging with others, emotions, and experiences. If you ever felt unseen, unloved, or unsafe with those you depended on, this would likely be a great approach for you.
Using predominantly EFT and incorporating ideas from the Gottman Method, we work with couples or polycules to repair, strengthen, and deepen romantic connections. Whether you are navigating a relationship rupture, preparing for marriage, contemplating parting ways, experiencing sexual difficulties, or coming in with other concerns, Calming Currents Psychological Services can help. Couples and polycules grow deeper understanding of themselves and their partners, in addition to concrete skills needed to improve communication and connection.
Outdoor therapy, or walk and talk therapy, provides a unique mental health experience. By engaging in therapy while also incorporating movement and the outdoors, we can maximize the benefits of your session. Available only in Asheville, NC, we can meet at a trail that is appropriate for you and your physical capabilities. Increase the amount of time you spend in nature by merging it with your weekly therapy session.
