Couples Therapy

Using predominantly Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), we work with couples or polycules to repair, strengthen, and deepen romantic connections. Whether you are navigating a relationship rupture, preparing for marriage, contemplating parting ways, experiencing sexual difficulties, or coming in with other concerns, Calming Currents Psychological Services can help. Couples and polycules grow deeper understanding of themselves and their partners, in addition to concrete skills needed to improve communication and connection.

Calming Currents provides attachment-focused couples therapy using Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT). This provides support to couples, polycules, and consensual non monogamous relationships for navigating conflict, attachment injuries, communication difficulties, breaches of trust, and major relational transitions. Through weekly sessions or therapeutic couples intensives, Calming Currents can help you find the spark that got lost along the way. Read more below about intensive options.

Couples Therapy may be right for you if:

Couples Therapy Services

Traditional Couples/Polycule Therapy

Using the standard therapeutic approach, couples meet weekly for either 60 or 90 minute sessions. Couples will first meet together with Dr. Katelyn Cooper, then each meet with her individually for further information gathering, then continue meeting together weekly.

Relationship Intensives

Relationship intensives allow couples/polycules to deep dive into therapy, spending an entire weekend with Dr. Katelyn Cooper. Day one begins with gathering history, identifying patterns, and understanding each individual’s attachment patterns. Once patterns are recognized, couples/polycules spend the remainder of the weekend dissolving tension, learning to better understand and express their emotions, needs, and fears within the relationship. Couples/polycules then deepening connection and understanding. Throughout the process, couples are taught concrete skills to use outside of therapy, allowing them to create change right away.

Intensive Schedule Breakdown (Total ~15 Hours)

Day One - 3 hours (Usually Friday afternoon or week of intensive)

  • Dr. Cooper meets with couple together - 1 hour

  • Dr. Cooper meets with each partner individually - 1 hour each (2hrs)

Day Two - 6 Hours

  • Focus on reducing tension, understand emotions underlying patterns, learn to recognize the pattern as the problem, not each other

Day Three - 6 Hours

  • Learn to express needs and desires, create new patterns of interacting with each other, discuss how to integrate what you’ve learned from this therapeutic experience into everyday life

Couples Intake Intensives

Intake intensives provides the opportunity to accelerate the therapeutic process. Traditional couples intakes takes approximately 4-5 weeks of information gathering and pattern identification before the clinical work really gets going. Some couples/polycules are eager to begin working towards change, which is why I offer intake intensives. These intensives include 5 hours of meeting together and individually with Dr. Katelyn Cooper to get this introductory but important stage of therapy complete, so partners can begin the deep work immediately upon completion of intensive.
